When you set up a POS in Florida, settle five things with your accountant: sales tax on prepared food, local surtaxes, how tips and service charges are treated, how the tip credit and minimum wage are applied, and how reports should be exported. This page lists the questions. It is not advice. Sources are being added.
Read this first
This is a question list, not advice. Rates and wages change, and local details matter. We will publish each fact only with a source from the state agency and a last-checked date. Until then, bring every item to your accountant.
1. Sales tax on prepared food
Confirm the state rate and any county discretionary surtax at your address. Ask which items are taxed and how combos, delivery fees and service charges are treated. Enter the rules into the POS and test each channel: counter, QR, online and kiosk.
2. Local differences
Florida counties can add their own surtaxes, so two restaurants a few miles apart may charge different totals. If you have more than one location, set tax rules per location. Multi-location management in Zorveta One lets you set tax rules per location from one place.
3. Tips and service charges
Ask how automatic gratuities and service charges are classified, and how card tips are paid out. Ask what records you must keep and for how long. These choices flow into your tip settings.
4. Tip credit and minimum wage
Florida has its own minimum wage and a tip credit that lets employers pay tipped employees a lower cash wage when tips make up the difference. The figures change on a schedule. Confirm the current numbers with the state before you set pay rates, and record tips so the credit can be shown to be earned.
5. Reports and exports
Ask your accountant which reports they need: daily sales, taxes collected by rate, tips by employee, voids and comps. Set them up once and test an export early.
How this connects to your setup
Tax rules live in your menu and channel setup. Tip and wage settings live in labor. The time clock feeds them. Tip pooling rules split tips by the rule you choose.
What we will add
For each point we will add the agency link, the last-checked date and a plain summary. Until then, see the Florida page for local notes, and read the tip handling guide for records and disputes.
