Texas restaurant tip and tax notes for POS setup

By Zorveta team · Updated · 2 min read

When you set up a POS in Texas, settle five things with your accountant: sales tax on prepared food, how mixed beverage taxes are handled, how tips and service charges are treated, the tipped wage rules, and how reports should be exported. This page lists the questions. It is not tax advice. Sources are being added.

Read this first

This is a checklist, not advice. Tax and wage rules change, and local details matter. Each fact on this page will be published only with a source from the state agency and a last-checked date. Until then, treat every item as a question to bring to your accountant.

1. Sales tax on prepared food

Confirm the state rate, any local add-ons that apply at your address, and which items are taxed. Check how combos, delivery fees, service charges and gratuities are treated. Enter the result as tax rules in the POS and test each channel: counter, online, QR and kiosk. A rule that works at the counter but is missed online causes errors.

2. Mixed beverage taxes

If you serve alcohol, ask which taxes and reports apply, how they are calculated and what the POS must record. Ask how happy-hour pricing and discounts are treated. Ask what your accountant needs from your reports each period.

3. Tips and service charges

Ask how automatic gratuities and service charges are classified, and how card tips are paid out. Ask what records you must keep and for how long. This matters when you set up tip settings in the system.

4. Tipped wages

Texas follows rules for tipped employees that sit alongside federal rules. Ask your advisor which cash wage applies and how to document tips so the pay is right. Do not rely on a number you read online without a current source.

5. Reports and exports

Ask what your accountant needs to prepare filings: daily sales, taxes collected, tips by employee, voids and comps. Set up the reports once, and test an export at the start.

How this connects to your setup

Tax settings live in your menu and channel configuration. Tip settings live in labor. See labor and tip handling, where tips are recorded and split by your rule.

What we will add

For each point we will add a link to the agency page, the date we last checked and a plain summary. Until then the Texas page shows our launch status, and the tip handling guide explains records and disputes.
